The heart of Lucerne bypasses over the Reuss River and taking you across it, is the Kapellbrücke.
According to the pamphlet my traveling buddy Amanda grabbed, the Chapel Bridge was constructed in 1408 making it the oldest covered bridge in Europe. As you walk through, look up for there is a series of medieval-style 17th century plague paintings entitled Dance of Death that were created to remind Lucerne citizens “how fragile life is”. In 1993, a fire destroyed almost all the paintings, but they were quickly redone, signifying their importance within Lucerne’s culture.
Flowers cover the bridge and in spring, are in full bloom. The bridge – originally designed to protect the town during war – was a catalyst in our journey through town and back. We walked through it several times, each of us noting a different painting every time.
I liked the uniqueness off the bridge and how beautiful it looked as a few rays of sunshine peaked through the gray clouds. Even though I couldn’t name all the flowers decorating the sides of the bridge, it didn’t matter – they were only representing one fraction of how beautiful Lucerne truly is.
